On October 6, 2002 sixteen friends gathered
for the purpose of founding a new golf club...
a club based on camaraderie, friendly competition
and an interest in the true spirit of the
game of golf. The Greenville Golfing
Society was born.
The
idea for the Greenville Golfing Society
originated in Carnoustie, Scotland during
a visit to the "auld sod." Four
of our founding members discovered that many
of the golf clubs which play over Scotland's
seaside links don't actually own the courses
they play. These clubs, they learned, were
formed by groups of individuals for the sole
purpose of socializing and sharing the game
golf through friendly competition on their
local courses.
Independent
golf clubs, often called "societies,"
flourish throughout Scotland and are a cornerstone
of the beginnings of the game. The Carnoustie
Golf Club and Caledonia
Golf Club, for example, are two of many
clubs that play over the Carnoustie links.
In
St Andrews, several independent clubs call
the town's courses home. Among them are the
St
Andrews Golf Club and the world famous
Royal
& Ancient Golf Club.
While
visiting the Crail
Golfing Society, the seventh oldest golf
club in the world, the decision to form an
independent club back home was firmly set.
